Hors Sujet - Novembre EP (2014)
The latest EP to come from the long-running solo project that is Hors Sujet is a two-track affair with a focus on gradual build-up, altering gentle string arrangements into storms of volume and distortion, and putting a significant amount of focus on the under-currents that provide a forward push to the songs. The first track, "L'ancre et la tempête", is the larger of the two, pushing over 12 minutes of pulsing developments and layer upon layer of audio arrangement before bursting towards the end.
"C'est comme ça que les fantômes reviennent" provides a smooth transition before delving into its own flavor, which uses more focus on bass tones, though the twanging strings remain a steady presence with their hypnotic refrains. Relatively forceful chords slide into effect around the mid-way point, bringing with them jolts of percussion before fading back into tranquility, then resurfacing in a drive all the way to the end.
It's more restrained than much of what we cover here at RWTD, but the song-writing and arrangements are strong enough (and the bass emphatic enough) to make for a great accompaniment to frigid nights when the snow is piling up outside your door, and the hot-blooded stuff just doesn't feel like the right match. Put this on when you're in the mood for something that can tell its story purely through the instrumentation, and see if it doesn't raise some goosebumps.
