Black Emerald - B.O.D. (2014)
This EP from the UK-based Black Emerald
finds them full of vinegar (and probably a few other substances) as
they channel some blackened thrash into a base of sludge. Grimy and
aggressive, the group's members are more than capable of pulling out
some clean melodies, but as they make clear, they're much more
interested in spine-snapping, body-shaking, foaming-at-the-mouth
energy cut loose. Listening to it, I have to imagine that fights
breaking out in the pit are a common event at Black Emerald's shows,
as the violence of the music comes across as honest and
un-manufactured. Sure, they're easy-going enough to let a groove
riff slip in here and there, but when the time comes to unleash, they
don't hold back. Good stuff, worth keeping an ear on this band to
find out how they'll develop from here.
