Infested With Awesomeness...

Swarm Of Spheres - Self Titled (2012)
Ever wondered what Isis would be like if Aaron Turner had been heavily influenced by classic rock like Mountain, Cactus and Grand Funk? Or how Clutch would sound if they all had anger management issues and lets say, a chronic meth dependency? If the answer is yes to either, or both of those questions then for christ's sake you have to hear these guys!
By far my best find while trudging through Bandcamp this year. A mixture of post metal stylings but with a deep seeded groove that resonates through every single note and chord. It's a pretty unorthodox combination and not one I can really pin directly to any other band to give you a comparaison. The post metal ethos stems from a certain intermittent tone and a somewhat disjointedness that the band have adopted in parts. But this is only really a small part of a bigger picture. The bulk of the record very much acts like a groove fuelled freight train thundering along at a pleasantly terrifying pace. Jay's deep gravelly vocals wash around a sea of thrashing percussion and fuzzy riffs that seem to pay homage to a wide selection of genres, seamlessly whaling in and out of doom, classic rock, psych, stoner and southern rock licks. It's nothing short of mind blowing to think how well these relative unknowns have pulled it off especially when you recall all the more established bands that have tried similar feats and fallen flat on their faces. But with a credential that lists them from coming from such former bands as The Chariot, Architect and Jesus Mullet we really shouldn't surprised at the quality.
The fact of the matter is if you've got s f**king brain in your nut you should be check out this beauty of an EP. But don't stop there, go show the band some love by hitting up their facebook page. From what hear they're currently on the look out to get some vinyl pressed...

Two Man Wolf Pack...

Sunwølf - Beyond The Sun (2012)
Bit of a mellower, less angry entry to Brett's usually sludge/doom Wednesday offerings today. It's his birthday, so I've given him the day off.
It's been a while since I've really sat back and listened to some new 'shoegaze' (god, I hate that term) kinda material. I think If These Trees Could Talk's Red Forest was possibly the last real new album of the genre that I truly bathed in. But we all need to sit back and unwind every now and again so it's about time my iTunes was graced with a worthy successor, and you know what, I think I may just have found just the tonic. Hailing from Leeds UK, this pair of fellow Brits have really bolted out the gates with a fierce conviction and execution. Recording the seven tracks under the guidance of Ross Halden who's worked with the likes of Rolo Tomassi and Wiht they then passed over the mixing duties to Mell Dettmer, who has many years putting the finishing touches to recordings by Sunn O))), Boris, Sleep and Earth. Not a bad little team to be working on your debut, I'm sure you'll agree? So a killer album's inevitable right? Well, yeah pretty much. There's no point burying the lead here I guess, because this thing does tick all the right boxes. Granted, if you're not that much into the post rock genre and its offshoots then it obviously wont be your cup of tea. But if you have ever ordered anything from say, Cavity, Denovali or The Mylene Sheath I'd go out on a limb and say this little gem will win you over. Entirely instrumental and with a slightly more clinical sound to my personal instrumental favourites; Giants, the record like many of its predecessor's takes a slow emotional wind up across the bulk of the first couple of tracks before tearing through track number three, Morose Land like a herd of horses through a thunder storm. The pay off doesn't just get thrown at you in one big bulky load though, as the album progresses it meanders and weaves through a sheer geography of genres and styles. Touching base with some post metal early Isis like moments, ambient melancholy and even half way through the second from last track, hinting at a slow almost disjointed deep south blues tone. It's honestly a blinding first time effort from a band that are only gonna go from strength to strength.
I've had a word with Matt from the band and he's been kind enough to throw a track or two up for a free download prior to the albums official release on November 26th.

And So, It Spreads Outwards...

The Ripple Effect - Volume 1: Head Music (2012)

The music industry and the internet have had a shaky history together, mainly because of the degradation of the cd and vinyl by mp3 downloads. But it’s this kind of thing that reestablishes my faith in the relationship between the two. What started out as a simple forum created by two music lovers, Todd Severin and John Rancik , 5 years ago has evolved into a full on record label, radio show, and a kickass website. And now to celebrate this timely benchmark, they’ve released a compilation of the best tracks they’ve put on their site and some other tracks from their favorite acts that haven’t been previously been released. This is the first time that I’ve had to review a compilation for the blog and I think that when you’re listening to the album itself, you have a different approach critically than if you were listening to an album by just one band. You have to be more open to variety within the album, but you don’t have to worry as much about quality because these songs were specifically handpicked because they’re good. The compilation truly is great, filled to the brim with southern fuzz, gritty vocals, reverbed psych bits and awesome bass lines. I’ve been listening to this album for a couple of days, and because of it I’ve pretty much found out about 10 different bands that I now love, I’m sure you will want to research each one of these bands further like I did, and maybe even visit the ripple effect site. JUST DON’T FORGET ABOUT US HERE AT RIDE WITH THE DEVIL! Especially because we have a compilation of our own, so stay tuned at the end of the year for it. The compilation is apparently the first of many and it’s available for free on the site’s bandcamp page.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but just to keep in line with last weeks news of Hydra Head Records going down the pan, this week Throne Records have announced that they will be shutting up shop at the end of the year. Crap news I know, but there is just one slight bonus to come out of all this, they're having one hell of a sale. Head over to their shop and have a looksy at some great bargins.

Waxing Lyrical...

Eagle Twin - The Feather Tipped The Serpent's Scale (2012)
It's been way too long since I brought y'all some lovely new vinyl releases on here so I may as well come back with a real belter and this sure does hit the mark. Yup after nearly 3 years of waiting Eagle Twin have finally delivered the follow up to the brutally mind blowing 2009 debut The Unkindness Of Crows.
If you're only just catching wind of these guys then you're probably going to want to get your head around the term 'progressive doom' for starters. Why? Well this duo have managed to carve themselves out quite a niche over the last few years and as a result their debut managed to plant it feet firmly within several genres like a giant monolith on the doom/drone/stoner/sludge/metal scene. Three years later and the monolith still stands, now somewhat surrounded by hoards of cultists as their fan base has gone from strength to strength. It's no surprise really either especially after releasing this beast to wreak havoc on your eardrums. Stomping out the gates in a simular behemoth fashion to the first release, with it dark harmonics and haunting monk like chants/groans the first thing you really notice is the slightly more polished tone. Not always a good move for bands of this genre(s) I grant you, but in this case it's paid of exponentially. The occasional disjointedness or dark jazz elements of the first record have been all but reworked and attacked from a new angle tipping the genre scales more in favour of a post rock/metal ethos. Think Omega Massif but with a schizophrenic Al Cisneros (Sleep) supplying vocals and occasional stoner doom riffs. It's tight, its varied and to be honest it serves as somewhat of a depth-charge when it comes to blowing most other doom acts out the water. Lets just see if they can top it in another three years time.

Don't Drink The Kool-Aid...

Cult Of Occult - Self Titled (2012)
Here we have a four track album of down tempo slow crushing sludge. This is Cult of Occult’s first realease but they sound like seasoned veterans of hurling pissed off sludge into your fat mouth. Cult of Occult is a four piece from France (I think) based on looking at photos of them and smelling cigarettes and hairy armpits. What I really like about this band is their gear, I ain’t much of a gear head but when you see a sludge band with two half stacks how are you supposed to feel that overwhelming sense of impending doom? These guys do it right, four full stacks and only one guitarist and a bassist. The slow churning of this doom machine does their wall of amps justice as they tear up every false doom band in its path. This is definitely an album to listen to after the bar finishing off your night of drinking in you’re buddy’s backyard convinced you need one more only to fall asleep with it in your hand. Good night.

Tempted By Satan...

Zodiac - A Bit Of Devil (2012)

The story behind this album's opening little ditty is that a couple of musicians all the way in Germany were jamming together, they were digging the sound, one thing led to another and Zodiac was born. They came out with a demo in 2011 which is also top notch (and a link to which can be found below) but the this years album A Bit of Devil is the focus of this article.
They have captured a very concrete sense of what it takes to make a southern style blues influenced rock song. But nonetheless, they still add a bit of a modern flare to it and some psychedelic elements in the mix. The guitars are crackling with distortion, the bass is outstanding, the vocals are gritty and the drumming drives the whole thing home. But just like the opening song Diamond Shoes, the entire album oozes with southern style. So what do the other tracks add? The great majority of them are still a very good heavy southern rock with a lot of modern hard rock influences. But that’s not all, they also have one slow acoustic blues song and another slow swingy but still distorted blues song. All in all, it’s a great album, with some variety in specific tracks. Get it while its hot!

News...

Well, following last weeks bombshell that the mighty Dopefight have parted ways, the sad and depressing news just keeps flooding in. There's been a few cracking little pre orders appeared this week people. Most impressive of which is for  The Sword new upcoming album Apocryphon out in the middle of October. Hairy Psych Sir?...

Monobrow - Bennington Triangle Blues (2012)

Fancy a trip back in time? Or maybe just a healthy dose of fuzzy instrumental psych to wash down that bong smoke? Well if you answered yes to either, or most likely both knowing our lovely followers, then you're in the right place today!
The Canadian trio really set the bar high for themselves with their first self titled release, so I think we can let them off when it comes to the fact that its taken 2 years to crank out this little gem of a follow up. But that time has clearly been put to good use, that much is evident in just the first few minutes. Where the first album rolled and thundered along in a predominantly fuzzy and down tuned fashion the new one feels a whole lot more rounded out. It's still bursting at the seams with huge fuzzy riffage, but this time around it's adopted a slightly more classic rock aura. That plentiful distortion with a touch here and there of echo really make this new offering not just pop but gives it a more layered and advance entire sound. If the first album was produced through haze of bong smoke the guys clearly hit the studio with a head full of acid. They're like a Pelican for the psychedelic generation, and lets face it, who doesn't want a little of that?!

If You're Gonna Be A Bear Be A...

Grizzly - Fear My Wrath (2012)
Damn, the second you hit play on Grizzly’s six track album Fear My Wrath they come out swinging and don’t let up until you realize you’re getting your ass kicked lying in the middle of Broadway being stomped out by a pair of boots only to ask, “Who kicked my ass? That hurt.” Grizzly brings us a fast up beat type of metal that is doom riff influenced, and breaks off into stoned sections with whining guitars only to bring forth the barrage of heavy distorted riffage. The guitars are heavy hitting and keep that stonery blues derived groove steady throughout the whole album. Raspy beer fueled vocals keep the groove on track only breaking to take another sip of Budweiser. Grizzly is a five piece from Budapest, Hungary. Budapest? I didn’t realize they had barbeques in Hungary. I only came across one image of Grizzly and I have to say, nice Tevas. Keep it heavy.

Sorting Through The Scrap...

Pile - Magic Isn’t Real (2010)
Alright, so I was browsing around for bands on bandcamp a couple of days ago, bored out of my mind, trying to find a suitable group for my next review. Without even noticing, I stumbled upon this: “Pile” and their stuff started playing while I kept looking for other bands, it was ok, I mean, I’m not a big fan of the whole indie rock thing that so many bands are trying to do these days with soft vocals, intricate and clean guitar chords, and absent drumming…but then, I heard it, truly beautiful, the vocalist lets out a visceral scream, the guitarist attacks the strings, the drummer destroys the cymbals and the bass player is exceptional! I had no idea what was going on, I just knew that it was awesome. Naturally, I kept on listening, and found that this four-piece band from Boston has made a Frankenstein monster of a musical genre, mixing in a vast vocal range - from clean Coldplay style singing all the way to brutal hard-core shrieks - on the guitar side if things, every chord you can possibly imagine a human hand can perform be it intricate or just punk style repetitive AND sweet blues and rock influenced riffs, a kick-ass drummer, and finally a bass player with so much prowess and character that the speakers make my room shake with awesomeness. I cannot recommend this band enough, this huge mix of styles really made it stand out from the other stuff that is available to us on the net.
The night before I first discovered Pile, I was hanging out with some friends, so coincidentally, I got home pretty late and I was kind of tired throughout the following day. I was already kind of hazy when I listened to these Bostonians for the first time, and then I had what could possibly have been the idea of the century: I napped…while listening to this album. I can barely describe what it felt like half dreaming half listening to this crazy stuff, although I can say that it was amazing. But also, don’t forget to listen to the album while paying attention to it, because some of this stuff may go unnoticed if you’re dozing off.

News...

Bit of heartbreaking news now. Blog favourites and our good friends Dopefight have announced today that they are sadly no more. The guys have made the tough decision to go their separate, but fear not, we'll no doubt be the first to bring you their individual new tunes.
The UK's underground sludge scene has taken quite a hit with this one, so lets remember them doing what they did best...

From The Wintery Depths...

Dödaren - Maen (2012)

Last year these fellas really impressed me with their little 3 track EP Flyttar In, it roared straight out the gates with a determined wholly Scandinavian array of riffs and composure. Well now the Swedes are back, having busied themselves in the studio they return with an extensive armoury comprising of 8 new tracks. Much to my hopes the guys have retained the original up-tempo beat and ambiance, churning out licks all bathed in that certain twang that only seems to come from those northern snowy parts. But alas that is a lot to keep up with when you're knocking out an extra five tracks, so this time around you're treated to timely waves of ambiance and break downs leading to a more chilled out and melancholy feel in places. As with the EP the vocal tone is absolutely spot on throughout the album. Thats about as much as I can really elaborate on as far as the singing goes because I can't understand a single word. Not that that's necessarily an issue. Hell, I can only pick out a few choice words when I'm listening to Church Of Misery and they're one of my favourite bands and they're (somewhat) speaking English. So yeam, if Swedish isn't your native tongue then you may not have much of a clue about whats being sung about too, but if like me you too appreciate the power of the riff then Maen is well worth your attention!
Fredrik from the band informs me that you'll be able to pick up a digipack version of the album around December time. Until then, y'all know what to do...

A Dose Of Danish Doom...

Bottom Feeder - Self Titled (2012)
Pure evil sludge. Honestly, I could just leave it at that, but I’ll expand a little. Bottom Feeder’s self titled demo or EP or whatever is two songs long that leaves me wanting more, so I usually end up playing it again. This nasty sludge five piece hails from Copenhagen, Denmark and has enslaved Raw Birth records to releasing their doom offerings. They released a small run of tapes and seven inchers for these two crushing songs but good luck coming across a copy, they are hard to find. This demo meanders through heavy riffage that doesn’t let up and keeps you winding through each dead end corner lost in their wall of amps. Completely warranted space guitar wanderings flow smoothly while the giant beast chugs along crushing the teeth in our meaningless skulls. The vocalist exorcises from deep within, expelling a nasty goblin-esque sludge.
Bottom Feeder definitely knows what they are doing. If you are a fan of EHG and are looking for something darker, here it is. Last week, I had the hard time deciding when to play these two tracks at a doom metal night I had organized at our local pool hall/bar in Arizona. So, maybe I played each one more than once. And oddly there was some dude there from Denmark who also played in a band called Throw Me in the Crater.

Hell Of A Mouthful...

Hibagọn - ...VS Monsters Spewed from Time’s Stomach to Clutch the Universe in a Mortal Slime (2012)
I guess you can call me old fashioned or maybe even ignorant in the fact that when I think of Italian music, I can only picture big fat opera singers having the world’s loudest conversation on a stage in front of thousands of people. Granted, I do love classical music and opera and I listen to it occasionally, but come on, rock music is where it’s at, am I right? Or else I wouldn’t be writing for this blog. So now I’m listening to Hibagọn, an instrumental stoner rock band from (you guessed it) Italy. The first couple of times I listened to these guys I noticed a great prowess in a musical skill that I believe is essential to instrumental rock music, that is, the flow between different riffs. By that I mean it shows that this dynamic duo really gave thought to the sequence of events in their songs and they’ve succeeded in intertwining amazingly pumping riffs together in a manner that doesn’t make the song stop. Well, this unstoppable train does often get crazy at times because of the experimental nature of the music that Hibagọn is making. In their album, the Italian duo often tries out unorthodox time signatures and musical patterns, which may turn off some listeners but to the trained musical ear, it’ll only increase interest (and trust me, if you visit this blog often you’re going to love this band). Strangely, every time I listen to them I have no idea what’s coming up next because of the different song styles in the album, ranging from almost heavy metal like volume-fests to soft lounge-like songs.

As you may have already noticed by the title of the article and the actual picture of the album above it, these guys went all out with the text on the album cover, I don’t think I’ve ever seen such a long album name, and it made me think, what is Hibagọn? And what exactly is it doing against the monsters from time’s stomach? Well, I did some research and Hibagọn apparently is the Japanese equivalent of big-foot…yeah. I guess the band members captured one and they’re trying to get money to feed it. But in all seriousness, download the album. It’s great and filled with surprises, and if you can, send them some money over (we don’t want the Japanese big-foot to starve)
